Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening lifts staining with trays made for your teeth and a gel only dental professionals may legally supply. Results vary by patient, which is why we assess your teeth first rather than promising a set number of shades, so you know what to expect before you start treatment.

What it is and who it's for

Professional teeth whitening lifts staining and discolouration caused by food, drink and lifestyle factors like smoking, using custom-fitted trays and a gel only dental professionals may legally supply. We use the Boutique Whitening system: trays custom-made from an impression of your teeth, worn at home with a professional whitening gel. It suits anyone with staining they’d like to lighten, once we’ve assessed that whitening is suitable for their teeth. Treatment typically takes 2 to 3 weeks depending on your staining and how much lift you’re after, so it’s worth planning ahead if you’ve a big event on the calendar, such as a wedding.

How treatment works

  1. Assessment and custom trays

Your dentist examines your teeth and takes an impression to make whitening trays custom-fitted to your mouth.

  2. Wearing your trays

You wear the trays with an activated gel for the time your dentist instructs, typically around an hour, for day or overnight formulas.

  3. Maintaining your result

Good oral hygiene and cutting back on heavily pigmented food and drink help the whitening effect last.

What you can expect

  • A custom-fitted tray made for your teeth using the Boutique Whitening system, not a one-size gel strip
  • Day or overnight formulas, depending on what suits you
  • Assessed by your dentist first, so the system suits your teeth
  • Results commonly maintained for 6 to 12 months with good care

Common questions

How does teeth whitening work?

A whitening gel, hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, sits in custom-fitted trays against your teeth and breaks down surface staining through a safe chemical reaction, lightening the tooth over the course of treatment.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is safe and effective for most people, but it isn’t right for everyone — certain dental conditions or sensitivities can rule it out. We’ll check your teeth and gums at consultation and let you know honestly whether whitening is a good option for you.

How long do results last?

With good oral hygiene and by limiting heavily pigmented food and drink, whitening results are commonly maintained for 6 to 12 months before a top-up is needed.

Can I whiten teeth that have crowns or veneers?

You can, but crowns and veneers won’t lighten the way natural teeth do, so there can be a shade difference. We usually recommend whitening before any new restoration so it can be colour-matched.
